01What the subject actually is
Biochemistry and molecular biology asks how living things work at the chemical level — how proteins fold, how genes are expressed, how cells signal one another. If questions like that pull at you naturally, and if you find quantitative problem-solving satisfying rather than exhausting, the subject is probably worth a serious look. If you're drawn more to patient contact or clinical care, it probably isn't — and that self-knowledge matters before you commit four years to a degree.

The programme at the University of Debrecen runs over four years and rests on three pillars: chemistry, biology and mathematics. Graduates move into research, pharmaceuticals, clinical laboratories, corporate science and academia. The range is real, but so is the workload — this is not a degree that rewards passive study.
02Before you choose a programme
Not every biochemistry programme is equivalent, regardless of the institution's name. When comparing options, look at whether faculty run active research labs and whether undergraduates can join them — bench research experience before graduation makes a measurable difference to what comes next. Consider the campus environment too: size, housing proximity and day-to-day practicalities shape your experience as much as the curriculum does. And check entry requirements honestly against your actual grades, not the best-case figures a brochure might imply.

03The mentor question
One of the most useful things you can do early is find a working biochemist or molecular biologist to shadow. A mentor shows you what the role genuinely looks like — whether that is bench research, a corporate lab or laboratory administration — before you have spent years heading in the wrong direction. Different professionals within the field often have strikingly different daily realities, and understanding that early helps you choose a path that fits your actual strengths.
