01The City on Foot, Wheels and Tram Lines

The University of Debrecen's main campus sits along Egyetem Avenue, and much of student life clusters within a walkable radius of it. For anywhere further, trams are the backbone of daily movement: line 1 runs the length of the city's main artery, connecting the campus to the city centre and the railway station efficiently and cheaply. A monthly student pass costs a fraction of what public transport runs in Western Europe, and it covers both trams and buses.

Cycling is genuinely practical here. The city is flat, the distances are short, and a decent second-hand bike — picked up through student Facebook groups or the flea market — is one of the better early investments you can make. In winter, students tend to switch back to the tram without much drama.

02Where Students Live — and How They Settle In

Most new international students start in university dormitories, which are affordable, centrally located, and socially useful: the people you meet in your first week often become your study group and your social circle. Rooms are shared, facilities are functional, and the environment is lively without being chaotic. After the first year, many students move into private flats, which are available across the city at costs considerably lower than Budapest or Vienna.

The habits that make a city feel like home tend to be small: a regular coffee place on Piac Street, a Sunday afternoon in the Great Forest, the market near the train station where produce is genuinely cheap. Debrecen rewards this kind of low-key exploration. The international student community is large enough that you will never feel isolated, but the city is not so overwhelming that you lose your footing. Most students describe a recognisable turning point — usually within the first month — when Debrecen stops being a destination and starts being where they live.
